A directory gives a list of websites, along with a short description of each of them, through a hierarchy and a classification in categories and menus. Web directories are similar to search engine database, to this difference that they are looked at and organised by human instead of automatically by machines. Web directories are used to find a specific website concerning a given subject.

These are the selective Internet finding aids that are arranged by subject and include only selected sites. Many portals and search engines have a directory component or partner. Most directories have keyword searching, but entries are also listed under one or more hierarchical subject terms or categories.
